Bodily Injury and Property Damage Coverage

Bodily Injury covers other people’s bodily injuries or death for which you are responsible. Bodily Injury coverage also provides legal defense if another party in the accident files a lawsuit against you.   Bodily Injury Liability does NOT cover you or other people on your policy.

Property Damage provides coverage when your car causes damage to another’s property.  Traditionally, that means there is coverage for the other vehicle that you damage.  Reality: Property damage coverage can cover any property damaged: A house, Fence, Light Pole, etc..

State Minimum coverage in Georgia is currently 25,000/50,000/25,000 (25/50/25).  The first two numbers, 25,000/50,000, is defined as ONE injured person has coverage up to $25,000.00.  If there are 5 injured people, the most the policy will pay for injuries in a single accident is $50,000.00.  NOTE: Remember, Bodily Injury Liability does NOT cover you or other people on your policy.  The last section of the 25/50/25 applies to the level of Property protection.  In any one accident, the most the policy is positioned to pay for the other person’s property damaged is defined by this value.

Un-Insured or Under-Insured Coverage:

(NOTE: This is not mandated coverage but it is HIGHLY encourage on ALL policies)

Uninsured Bodily Injury provides coverage to the insured, your household, and passengers for bodily injury, damages or death caused by an “‘at-fault’ uninsured driver”.  A hit and run driver is another potential opportunity for this coverage to provide benefit.

Underinsured Motorist Bodily Injury continues to cover YOU, your household, and passengers for bodily injury, damage or death caused by an “‘at-fault’ under insured driver”.  The difference in this coverage is the fact the driver causing injury WAS insured but his/her coverage was not sufficient to pay for the actual damages.  NOTE: In 2009, this coverage has resulted in some new benefits to the insured.  Watch for future posts …

Uninsured or Underinsured Property Damage covers YOUR property if damaged by an uninsured driver.  The underinsured coverage is beneficial when your car is worth $100,000 and the person that hit you only had Property Coverage of $25,000.00 (state min).  The person that hit you would have his policy pay upto $25,000.00 for car’s damage.  If your $100,000 car was totaled, who would pay the difference of $75,000?  This is where the Underinsured Property coverage kicks in.  If the person that caused the damage is Underinsured, your Underinsured Property coverage provides added protection for your loss.
